Responsibly sourced seafood can be one of the lowest-impact protein options around. It’s a healthy, nutritious food source that can help feed a population that’s only getting bigger. But we recognise the profound impact fishing can have on the environment and don’t shy away from the challenges facing the industry. That’s why we have embraced a holistic approach to our sustainability efforts working in harmony to protect the delicate ecosystems that nurture our oceans, as well as striving to look after people working to produce our fish.
We are dedicated to reducing our impact on the oceans by sourcing seafood responsibly. Transparency and traceability underlines everything we do.
Our fishers adhere to the highest sustainability standards to ensure the oceans’ biodiversity can be preserved for generations to come, and our farmers ensure our fish are reared in a way that puts their welfare first.
The fisheries and aquaculture sectors support the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide, creating jobs and ensuring a vital source of food. However, despite the existence of global laws and systems, the sad reality is that people working in these supply chains can be subjected to dangerous working conditions, modern slavery, and other extreme human rights abuses.
Our vision here is clear: we want to drive change and enhance lives through fish by protecting human rights and ensuring decent working conditions for all those that work in or for our business. It’s been so good to see the positive effect we have on our employees and communities associated with our operation, as well as the impact we’ve made with our supply chains.
But the hard work’s far from done. And we’re ready to face the challenges that lie ahead.
The leadership shown and the long-term commitment that NESI has made to championing sustainability has been instrumental in driving the MSC programme’s growth in the UK. For years, NESI has invested in building trust and awareness in the MSC programme within its supply base and used this expertise to support several fisheries on their journey to MSC certification. NESI's dedication to helping its customers achieve their sustainability goals has allowed many of the MSC’s largest retail partners to offer an ever-wider range of certified seafood to their customers. In partnership with the MSC, and through NESI's own brands, we have worked together to promote the many virtues of sustainable seafood to consumers in the UK. As a market-based programme, the success of the MSC as a tool for driving change has only been possible through the support and leadership of businesses like NESI.
New England Seafood proudly has the highest environmental and ethical standards in place and holds certifications from globally recognised seafood sustainability bodies such as the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council. This, of course, lets customers know they’ve made the right choice in buying our seafood products.
By working with organisations such as the Seafood Ethics Action Alliance and the Food Network for Ethical Trade, we can affect real change in the industry.
We learn more about sustainability every day and welcome every new challenge so that we can evolve to use our business as a force for good. We’re always developing our practices, innovating and embracing new technologies, and looking to collaborate with industry partners and push the boundaries of what’s possible. Together, we can ensure a thriving and healthy ocean environment – for us now, and future generations to come.
